Less protection and not as heavy as the impact model but cooler, better looking, easier to walk in and still really sticky. It does take a few rides to bed in but they're a great shoe for riding flats. I use them for trail riding, XC racing and enduro races.
Just changed over from riding clipless and found it makes a big difference to get good flat shoes and pedals. These shoe are very solid and well made and similar sizing to Shimano but probably more room in the toe box. Grip is amazing and combined with a good pedal your feet just stay planted like you're clipped in. Looks like a sneaker and you can walk and drive in them too. Highly recommended.
Fast postage from T7 and the shoe is brilliant. Although made in china, they are very gripy on the pedals and are comfortable to walk around in as well!
I've gone back to re-try flats after riding clipless for the last 10+ years, as there's been some recent argument that flats can still hold their own for mtb's, so I thought I'd try it out.
I have a good set of flat pedals but after riding in sneakers these past few weeks, they just can't compare to the grip and stability the Freeriders offer. Riding flats certainly forces you to clean up your technique, but it also adds back in the 'foot out, flat out' fun that mtbking is, for me anyway..
The sneakers fit 'true to size, as I take an 8US in Vans and bought an 8US. The toebox is a nice fit and not too wide. They have a thick tongue which beds your foot down nicely, but I expect that'll loosen up a bit after a few rides.
The soles are sticky, unlike anything I've ridden in before. They offer so much grip on the pedals that you almost feel clipped in. You get enough purchase on the pins that you actually pull back on the upstroke as well.
I did a 3 hour gravel/trails ride in them yesterday and, while I felt myself using muscles differently, pulled up fine. In fact the only difference was I think I had more fun than usual !
For anyone considering flat pedals, get a decent set of flats AND a pair of these, and you won't look back!
Always wanted to try these shoes to see what all the hype is about and glad I did. The size is exactly the same as my other shoes and they feel solid on the bike. Only gripe is the laces are way too long.
I,ve used Vans and DC skate shoes for years , but never again
The grip of these shoes is incredible and after a few rides there is no sign of wear on the soles , i,m betting they will last twice as long as the DC shoes i have been using previously.
If you ride flat pedals Fivetens are a must! The grip is amazing and so far they seem quite durable. They are much more "casual" looking so you won't feel out of place going to the pub or shops after a ride. I had some Fiveten Impacts which my girlfriend hated the look of and she thinks these are fine so that's a win! I also have quite wide feet and these shoes fit perfectly.
Overall these are great shoes for anyone riding flat pedals who wants the comfort and style of regular shoes but wants almost clipless stability.
Fantastic shoes, loads of grip which takes a bit to get used to at first.
For size reference I am a US11 in Nike/Nike SB shoes and I purchased the 5-10's in a US11 and they are a perfect fit.
